Art Therapyis a mental health profession that utilizes both art making processes and art products within the structure of a therapeutic relationship. Art therapists are trained to provide verbal psychotherapy in combination with a wide variety of expressive media and techniques. Clients often feel that using visual expression in therapy allows access to previously inaccessible thoughts and feelings, which can then be further processed verbally. Making art in a safe space can offer opportunities for expression, containment, relaxation, reorganization, and reflection. Art Therapy can be used in conjunction with other treatment approaches and in a variety of settings to support a wide range of treatment goals.
